Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Rotary Airlock Valve

Find answers to the most common questions asked by our clients.

A rotary airlock valve (rotary feeder) is a rotating vane device that meters material from hopper while maintaining air seal. Purpose: (1) Air seal: Prevents air from dust collector hopper leaking back up into clean air side (maintains negative pressure in system). (2) Material discharge: Continuously meters dust/material from hopper into disposal container or process. (3) Pressure isolation: Separates different pressure zones (positive to negative or vice versa). Construction: Cylindrical housing, rotor with 6-12 vanes, pockets between vanes carry material from inlet to outlet. Motor-driven 15-60 RPM. Applications: All dust collectors with hoppers, pneumatic conveying systems, silo/bin discharge, process feeding. Critical: Without airlock, hopper dust re-entrains into system defeating collection.
Sizing based on material discharge rate: Step 1: Calculate material volume. pounds/hour or kg/hour to be discharged. Step 2: Determine bulk density. Essential - affects pocket fill. Step 3: Select valve size. Common sizes: 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch refer to rotor diameter. Larger = more capacity. Capacity: 6-inch valve with 8-vane rotor at 20 RPM handling material at 800 kg/m³ bulk density discharges ~400-600 kg/hr. 12-inch valve = 2,000-3,000 kg/hr. Speed adjustment: Variable speed drive allows tuning discharge rate to match feed rate. Under-sizing: Hopper overfills, material spills. Over-sizing: Wastes cost but no operational problem. Special requirement: For abrasive materials, specify AR (abrasion resistant) rotor and housing with hardened surfaces or replaceable liners.
